Object of Reference- Fibre Optics
Objects of Reference are frequently used in special schools, hospitals and day care centres. The objects have special meaning's associated to them, they convey information without the need for words.
For example, a teacher might hand a spoon to a child at school, the special meaning associated with this spoon is that 'we are going to lunch soon.'
Objects of reference enable a child to make choices, anticipate what is going to happen next, understand that an activity has finished, or to give a child an opportuity to initiate an activity.
They are often used for those with multi-sensory impairments, as an alternative to speech.
Total Sensory have created a small, affordable bundle of fibres, heat sealed at the ends and secured in place by a small plastic ferrule. Ideal as an object of reference to say 'we are going to the sensory room soon' or for a child to convey that is where they feel like going.
